Evaluation of the policies of George W. Bush and his Republican conservatives on America.

Last night several candidates talked about the so called “Fair Tax”. That is a proposal to replace Federal Income, Medicare and Social Security taxes with a sales tax up to 30%. It was touted as FAIR which is a lie pure and simple. This is another Conservative plan to further lower the taxes on the wealthy.

Let’s take a look at just what a 30% sales tax would do.

The wealthy taxpayers only spend a portion of their income. Any income that they did not spend would escape this tax. A person with an annual income of $500,000 who spent $250,000 would pay taxes only on the $250,000 and would have an effective tax rate of 15%. A person with an income of $50,000 who most likely spends all of their income would have an effective tax rate of 30%.

A person with a $500,000 annual income pays $14,500 in Medicare taxes; $6,500 in Social Security Taxes and about $125,000 in income taxes for a total of $146,000. If they spent $250,000 of their $500,000 income under the Fair Tax they would pay $75,000 in tax (30% of $250,000). Their taxes would be cut in half!

A person making $50,000 pays $1,450 in Medicare; $3,200 in Social Security and $3,000 in income taxes for a total of $7,650. Under the Fail Tax they would pay $15,000 (30% of $50,000) Their taxes would be doubled!

In addition, how the low and middle income tax payers would pay this increased tax is a mystery!

YES this a FAIR Tax for ONLY the WEALTHY!

It is GREED to keep money from a tax cut that was not deserved or that is not needed by those who got most of the money! There was NOTHING to give back to the wealthy so they took something they were not entitled to since there was NO SURPLUS! Just another of the Bush Lies!

it is greed to demand that they pay more taxes so that you can give more of it away for pork.

It is not GREED to help those that need help

It is greed to forcibly take money from someone for any purpose, especially when "need" is not agreed upon. Greed has nothing to do with helping those in need - quit making it sound like there is some ying/yang connection. If money is to be forcibly taken from me, then I want strict ground rules about how it can be spent, not just your vague & subjective notion of "need." Pandering SOB.

It is not GREED to help those that need help or to keep the promises we have made to the retired
it isn't helping if it is stolen from you.

The Tax Cuts were stolen from the U.S. Treasury because there was no SURPLUS as Bush claimed from which to take the tax cuts!

The laws of this country allow the taxing of our citizens in order to enable the institutions of Government to function for the greater good of our country! IT IS NOT STEALING!

Gene, from reading your articles, what other conclusion is there than you are a communist? How do your views differ from Marx's Communist Manifesto?
on Dec 03, 2007
Since my thinking is in agreement with our Constitution and what the majority in our Republic want I see NO similarity with my views and those of Marx. You do not have any idea what you are talking about. Read Section 8 of our Constitution:

“Section 8. The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States”

Right, so where does it say that those who make more should more? That sounds a lot more like "From each according to his means, to each according to his needs".

Also, where does it state anything about "individual defense" or "individual welfare"?

ColKarlGenMarx it's all the same thing.

America passed legislation instituting an income tax in 1894 amid a fanfare that rivaled a football victory. One Congressman was carried off the floor of the House in triumph after delivering the introductory speech. Another, Rep. Uriel Hall, D-Mo., declared that, "Had I the naming of this bill, I would denominate it a measure to kill anarchy and keep down socialists." The Supreme Court disagreed one year later. In Pollock v. Farmers Loan and Trust, the court ruled that the income tax violated Article I, Section 2, of the Constitution.

It remained for Republican President William Howard Taft to slip past his own party leadership to insert a constitutional amendment to guarantee that an income tax could not be overturned.

Your history lesson for the day, Gene, from postgazette.com, since you can't be bothered.

part 2 of your lesson.

the republican party in that day and age is now the Democrat party.

for the common defense and general welfare of the United States;

You are taking the word "welfare" too literally gene.

COL Gene, is the Fair Tax an inclusive or an exclusive tax?
on Apr 08, 2008
The best tax would be a purely sales-tax, such that wise spending of the cash, such as saving, or putting it into essentials, would be encouraged, and spending it willy-nilly on whatever comes to mind would be discouraged.
