Evaluation of the policies of George W. Bush and his Republican conservatives on America.

After the delightful pictures of President Bush walking hand-in-hand with Prince Bandar, we learned that he failed to do anything about record oil prices. In 2000, when gasoline was selling for $1.61 per gallon and oil was $28 a barrel, Bush chastised Clinton for high fuel prices and told him to "jawbone" the prices down with the oil producers. Well so much for that idea. Oil is more than $50 barrel and gasoline is $2.26 per gallon and the Bush's jawboning has done nothing to lower oil prices.

Again yesterday Bush failed to address the one thing that both help to create the crisis and holds the key of providing some help in the midterm which is forcing higher mileage for SUVs, cars and trucks sold in the U S. Although the long-term solutions suggested by President Bush are necessary, help from his suggestions will not be effective for a decade or more. He fails to recognize that the increased consumption caused by trucks, SUVs and cars getting poor mileage is a major part of this problem. If four years ago he had reinstated reasonable increases in the miles per gallon of vehicles sold in the United States, this crisis would be far less drastic than it is today. What is disappointing is that Bush still does not recognize or is not willing to deal with real conservation by demanding that our cars, trucks and SUVs get higher gas mileage and cut the consumption of gasoline.

You must ask Bush what his hand holding and kissing is about. What ever Bush did has not worked!

"Damn Government! Wasting my tax dollars on cancer research! When are all you crybaby liberals going to wake up and realize that cancer is a personal health issue! All those idiots smoking and eating fried foods and filling their bodies with all kinds of carcinogens! Then they expect the Government to come along and take care of the problems they started!

"Admit it, you won't be happy till the government regulates every area of our lives and protects us from every possible thing that can harm us!

"You just can't bring yourself to admit that it isn't a government problem!"

Or plug in STD's, or... well anything really. Responsibility is such that anyone who remotely comes in contact with an issue can easily be blamed for being wholly responsible for the issue. To blame only consumers is as absurd and incorrect as blaming only the government. Everyone should do whatever they can to address whatever issues affect them.

With the energy crisis, there are certainly things that can be done at the governmental level to help the situation that consumers, even as a group, cannot. Further, protecting people who have nothing to do with a crisis from the effects of others' irresponsibility -- especially when it affects the entire nation -- is not only within the government purview, it is what the government is for, whether trying to stem rising energy costs or stopping market manipulations and chicanery.

Whether due to higher transportation or manufacturing costs, higher energy costs will eventually drive the prices of virtually everything up for everyone even if they don't own a vehicle. If unchecked long enough, the still fragile economy could be endangered. For the government to not address it at all would be malfeasance.

I find the assertion by ParaTed (who I've never had any problems with before and have interacted with positively in the past, but due to his unwarranted insults and attacks here is perilously close to getting blacklisted by me) that because certain consumers are partly responsible for a situation, the government should then do nothing about it to be ridiculous beyond belief.

(Oddly enough, the suggestions brought up by Zoomba, to which ParaTed gave kudos, all involve government action. Oh well, I guess whether a person knows "a hawk from a handsaw" depends on who you want to demonize.)

(And that really is my last word. Have fun pontificating, people.)

First it is draining monies from the poor and lower middle income Americans to pay the higher gas prices which affects the economy because they don't have money available to spend on other items.

Other items like what? Cell phones, Expensive clothes maybe? I guess thats why you said sales were decreasind, right. Oh wait, you were proved wrong on that also.
