Evaluation of the policies of George W. Bush and his Republican conservatives on America.

The complaints from our military to the Defense Secretary today are the latest in an unhealthy trend with our military force. Secretary Rumsfeld listened to the complaints from our soldiers in what appeared to be a big surprise for him today. This follows the refusal of a reserve unit to obay orders because they lacked the proper equipment. If also follows the statement of a National Guard General that his troops did not have the proper equipmemt.

Complaints about inadequate equipment, the stop loss policy that is disrupting the lives of both are active military and reserve forces as well of the extensive use of National Guard and reserves clearly document that both Bush and Rumsfeld failed to plan for the Iraq war. The secretary told the troops " you go to war with the army you have". The problem with that statement is that the United States chose when we went to this war. Why did we go to war without the necessary equipment and the manpower we need?

It the 2000 election, George W. Bush indicated that the army was too small and needed to the increased. He spent the last four years doing nothing to correct the problem that he himself identified. The Iraq war is not like World War II or Korea when the timing was forced upon us but rather we went to war against a country that was not threatening us in a preemptive fashion. It is time that the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense be made to explain why they chose to go to war without the necessary equipment and manpower. The lack of both has added to American casualties. We are approaching 1,300 dead; about 9,000 combat injuries and almost 15,000 noncombat related injuries. This war has killed or injured 25,000 young Americans. How many of these are because our Commander-in-Chief took our military to war improperly prepared?

I support the President overall, but I agree with you on the basic problem here, COL Gene (I know, check the temp in hell). We underestimated what we'd need and we've been too slow to remedy the problem. Bush merits legitimate criticism for this, but I don't subscribe to the notion that it was willful disregard.

One newsworthy aspect of Rumsfeld's visit, for which noone is giving proper credit, is the fact that this Q&A occurred at all and that it was done publicly. I credit Rumsfeld for taking that risk and it points out how fundamentally different our system is from others. Americans, even while in uniform, can offer dissent without fear of repercussions. I listened to the full audio version and there was quite a bit in Rumsfeld's response before he got to the "you go to war with the army you have" soundbite that gave the response a much more reasonable tone. But I think it's a good thing that he is getting direct unvarnished feedback from the frontline troops. I hope it results in speeding up the remedies needed.

Cheers,
Daiwa

Um, don't be angry with me, Col. Gene, I agree with you...so much so, I blogged a similar article on the Rumsfeld response to the questions from the soldiers. And you ask the same questions I ask myself often: why do we continue to support things when it seems clear that seem proof positive that they're not working? Again, my apologies. If it makes you feel better, there are now three threads about this issue on the forums! T-Bone did the same thing I did.

yeah, sorry Col. Gene...I try to make sure that I am not posting articles that are similar to other bloggers but I think the three of us posted almost at the same time.

"It is time that the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense be made to explain why they chose to go to war without the necessary equipment and manpower."

Exactly, instead of "passing the buck" all of the time. I find this constant shell game of not taking responsibility a bit tiresome. I understand that some things cannot be helped or avoided but this admistration has a consistent pattern of never taking responsiblity for its failures but I guess that is difficult to do when they can't even admit that they have made mistakes in the first place.

No Problem. I believe this subject needs more exposure. We have put our young men and women in danger and our President does not seem to understand that their sacrifice is not making America safer. Every day, when the Muslim people see the destruction, death and stories about prisoner mistreatment we dig a deeper hole for ourselves with the worldwide Islamic insurrection that is taking place. I suggest you all take a look at the Book, Imperial Hubris. I believe this book describes the danger facing America and the West by virtue of the policies we are following.
