Army Considers Longer Combat Tours Again
By ANNE FLAHERTY (Associated Press Writer)

WASHINGTON - The Army is considering whether it will have to extend the combat tours of troops in Iraq if President Bush opts to maintain the recent buildup of forces through spring 2008.

Acting Army Secretary Pete Geren testified Tuesday that the service is reviewing other options, including relying more heavily on Army reservists or Navy and Air Force personnel, so as not to put more pressure on a stretched active-duty force.

Most soldiers spend 15 months in combat with a guaranteed 12 months home, a rotation plan that already has infuriated Democrats because it exceeds the service's goal of giving troops equal time home as in combat. In coming weeks, the Senate will vote on a proposal by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., that would restrict deployments.

"It's too early to look into the next year, but for the Army we have to begin to plan," Geren told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "We have to look into our options."

Gen. David Petraeus, Iraq war commander, suggested Sunday that conditions on the ground might not be stable enough by September to justify a drop in force levels, and he predicted that stabilizing Iraq could take a decade. Earlier this year, Bush ordered the deployment of some 30,000 additional troops as part of a massive U.S.-led security push around Baghdad and the western Anbar province.

There are about 156,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.

If we can't get you to listen to us, how can we expect Bush to listen to us. Maybe you should apply your own ideals of getting people to listen by listening yourself. To get people to change by changing yourself. It seems OK for you to stay the same so long as everyone else changes for your benefit, right?

I look at what happens and then respond to what is taking place. That is NOT what Bush does. The violence in Iraq is NOT winding down just shifting from one location to another. Yesterday they found another 20 bodies in addition to the blast that killed about 75 and injured over 150 more. It has been 4 1/2 YEARS and we have not been able to establish stability in Iraq. The Iraqi Government IS NOT able or willing to compromise and without that we can not stop the fighting. The American Ground Military has been damaged to a VERY great extent by this prolonged war and to even think of extending the tours is unthinkable. Bush has proven by the results on the ground he is incapable of dealing with Iraq and for that matter the greater Middle East Region. Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Syria are all the SAME story-- The discord and hate toward our country is getting worse and NOTHING Bush has done has stabilize the area. In fact his policies have destabilized every area. When do you look at what you are doing and understand it is NOT WORKING? HOW many More must die, be injured and how many more BILLIONS spent on this misadventure? Anyone the continues to support the Bush policy in Iraq is NOT LOOKING at what is taking place. They are just like Bush-- Stubborn and ineffective.

If you believe Bush and the majority of the people he has appointed are meeting the needs of this country, you are living in a very different world. We have an administration that was unable to deal with Katrina, Iraq, Border Security, Energy, Education, the budget, North Korea, Trade. Please show us HOW the policies Bush and his administration have been following have successfully dealt with ANY of these issues. Only 20% of Americans believe we are headed in the right direction. The policies Bush has selected have also been implemented during the first six years by the GOP controlled Congress. Tell me the U.S. Ground Forces are not is trouble. To be considering making this worse is UNTHINKABLE!!!!!

TO YOU I SAY IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT!!!!!

I doubt there is anything Bush would want more than someone to cut the funding and remove the troops for him. The he isn't responsible for whatever happens next.

It is NOT WHAT BUSH WANTS! It is what is best for America. It is what Americans want. Following the failed policies in Iraq and getting more American Military killed and injured does not help anyone. The time has come to allow the Iraqi People to choose what they want. If it is an all out Civil War than that is there choice. If it a country that can exist as an entity- that will be their choice. All we need to insure is that any fighting does not spill over into other countries and we should do our best to destroy any al Qaeda operations in Iraq. So far as the fighting between the factions within Iraq, that should be left up to the Iraqi people.

Idiot? You keep talking about Bush as if I was talking about him. I am talking about you. How you never give an inch in any of your discussions. How a debate with you is a "my way or the highway" debate. Never do you ever admit to mistakes, never do you accept someone elses opinion, never do you agree with anyone. You call yourself a Republican but there are around 3 people on this site that reply almost in the same manner you do, they are all Democrats. The only real idiot here is you.

You argue with the facts. They clearly demonstrate the policies we are following are NOT WORKING.

Again, your stupidity shows. I do not argue the facts, I argue with you. You're to stupid to see it.

"Again, your stupidity shows. I do not argue the facts, I argue with you. You're to ( should be “too”) stupid to see it."

Since my arguments sight the facts you are saying the facts are not correct. That is not arguing with me. If the data had originated with me you could argue that MY FACTS were not correct. However when I sight facts from the Pentagon, or AP, OMB, CBO, GAO or the Treasury dept and you say what I post is not correct you are saying those sources are not correct.

YOU are the STUPID person.

Thank you for proving my point. The irony is that no one here has argued against you article yet you are replying as if anyone is saying the contrary to it. This is my point. Though I admit I am an idiot for even trying to get you to understand.

Bush WILL be responsible for what takes place when we leave. It is his policy that enabled the violence in Iraq to develop and he is responsible for enabling al Qaeda to set up operations in Western Iraq. He got his way in EVERY phase in Iraq and when we leave and there is an ALL OUT Civil War, it will be because of the Bush Policy!!!

We just lost another 12 Americans and three more MOSQUES WERE BOMBED. WAY TO GO GEORGE!

U.S. Military: 14 Troops Killed in Iraq
By HAMID AHMED (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
June 21, 2007 8:18 AM EDT
BAGHDAD - The U.S. military announced the deaths of 14 American troops, including five killed Thursday in a single roadside bombing that also killed four Iraqis in Baghdad.

Elsewhere in Iraq, a suicide truck bomber struck the Sulaiman Bek city hall in a predominantly Sunni area in northern Iraq, killing at least 13 people and wounding 70, an Iraqi commander said.

The U.S. deaths raised to at least 3,545 the number of U.S. troops who have died since the war began in 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The deadliest attack was a roadside bomb that struck a convoy in northeastern Baghdad on Thursday, killing five U.S. soldiers, three Iraqi civilians and one Iraqi interpreter, the military said.

A rocket-propelled grenade struck a vehicle in northern Baghdad about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, killing one soldier and wounding three others, another statement said.

Four other U.S. soldiers were killed and one was wounded Wednesday when their convoy was struck by a roadside bomb in a western neighborhood in the capital, the military said separately.

Southwest of Baghdad, two U.S. soldiers were killed and four were wounded Wednesday when explosions struck near their vehicle, according to a statement earlier in the day.

Two Marines also were killed Wednesday while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, west of Baghdad, the military said.
