Evaluation of the policies of George W. Bush and his Republican conservatives on America.
Published on December 13, 2007 By COL Gene In Politics

The GOP presidential debate yesterday contained a segment about the fiscal problems facing our country. The moderator sighted the Comptroller General warnings about the debt and continued budget imbalance as well as the coming problems with funding Medicare and Social Security. The GOP candidates agreed with the assessment of the Comptroller General that we have created a very serious problem. However when the questions of how to deal with this were pursued it became clear none of the GOP candidates have a CLUE!

On one hand they admit it is a major problem and then blame it on entitlements. That showed either a complete misunderstanding of the problem or a refusal to face the real cause which has NOT been entitlements i.e. Social Security and Medicare thru 2007. Both these entitlements have produced an annual SURPLUS which has been used to finance the deficit in the discretionary portion of the budget. None of the $9 Trillion dollars of debt comes from either Social Security or Medicare. The problem with entitlements is in the FUTURE. The coming problem with entitlement will be ON TOP of the problems created by the discretionary spending that has exceeded tax revenue since 1981. The candidates also claim we can solve the problem without any real sacrifice and propose to cut federal revenue more with additional tax cuts. That is not true and is totally opposite to what The Comptroller General has documented. The solution to BOTH the existing $9 Trillion dollar deficit and the coming problem of entitlements as the Baby Boomers retire will require MAJOR sacrifices by Americans.

ALL the GOP Presidential candidates are in denial as to the extent and solutions that will be needed to address the growing financial storm on the horizon. To all this must be added the huge trade deficit and falling value of the dollar as well as the energy situation. We also heard the same refrain that the “Market” will solve the energy problems and that we do not need government policies to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil. There was the admission of the problems created by OUR dependence on foreign oil but the same old refrain of the “Free Market” will provide the solution. If that were true, why is the energy problem for the United States getting worse every year? The truth is to solve the energy problem we need to have both government incentive and penalties that move forward domestically controlled alternative energy supplies and far more efficient use of oil including higher mileage for cars, trucks and SUV’s. Most of the GOP candidates admit their policies over the past 7 years have failed but at the same time they proposed, for the most part, to continue those same policies with only minor changes. If you are looking to solve the fiscal, trade and energy problems NONE of the GOP candidates are for you!

Of course it was time for another anti-GOP propaganda post. Instead of always complaining about the GOP, why don't you tell us what democrats are going to do to solve anything. I'm sure you can't because increasing taxes on one class of people and funding more entitlement programs will not solve the problem either.

you have really got to go back to history class.

this country was in debt before we had a constitution. and they decided to keep it that way when they signed the constitution. i do believe that was a long time before 1981.

because your driving a 1998 and a 2002 car and it isn't time to change cars

no taxes go up when you cut taxes and to cut the deficit you reduce spending.

house spending is up 63% this year. they haven't even passed the budget for the physical year that we are in now.

who is in charge of the house.

and she said she had to spend the money to take back power that the GOP gave to them when the GOP was in power.

so their not doing their job but their spending a massive amount of money on nothing

this is a true statement.

sacrifice does not mean taxing the rich and giving it to the poor.

This has NOTHING to do with pro or anti GOP it has to do with the answers given in the debate. If you look at the facts and at what the Comptroller General has DOCUMENTED, the answers from the GOP candidates do not agree with the facts as presented by Mr. Walker who has many times the credibility and understanding of the fiscal issues facing our country then ALL the GOP candidates COMBINED!!

I use the Bold and Underline to get through the THICK heads of some on this Blog site! What I posted is accurate and it is a shame that we do not have candidates from the major political parties that are ready to address the major issues. I will look at the Democrats today and will be just as critical of them if they show the lack of understanding the GOP candidates showed yesterday!

I have gone back-- we had $900 Billion of debt at the end of 1980. The debt has increased almost 10TMES since 1980 and 90% of the ADDED debt occurred during Republican Administrations!!!!!!! Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43.

No since I am driving the same cars my contribution is the same is it has been. I am also driving LESS miles now compared with 10 years ago. Again you are full of BS!

That was also true in the past when the GOP was in control. The reason the spending bills have not been passed is because the GOP is blocking action and Bush has threatened to veto the bills under consideration. Seems like it is the GOP and Bush that are causing the delays. The House should pass the spending bills, refuse to pass any more continuing resolutions and if the GOP in the Senate or Bush wants to shut down the government lets pin the tail on the Elephant!

It will require BOTH spending cuts and added tax revenue. We must insure that the added tax revenue come from those that got the BIG TAX CUTS and are the SAME people that can afford to pay a little more in taxes! So far as Medicare and Social Security are concerned we must either increase the money going to these two programs or we will be forced to cut benefits and fail to keep the promises we have made to those that are retired and about to retire.

so, here's an idea idiot!  Don't vote for any of them.  Wow, what a novel concept!

Sacrifice should mean taxing the rich, and giving less to the poor. i.e. the poor will have to go without many modern conveniences such as cable, private internet access, etc. Without those opiates, though, will it result in people putting forth more effort? Or will it lead to revolt?

this is true but it is also true that you increase the amount of taxes by giving tax cuts. as long as you don't go to far.

the majority of income tax comes from selling stocks and bonds and properity.

when income tax is high these sells become fewer. when the tax is low there are more sells.

Here is a example of the problem:

Senate Republicans Move on Energy Bill
By H. JOSEF HEBERT, AP
Thu Dec 13, 11:33 AM EST
The Senate was on the verge Thursday of approving and sending back to the House the first increase in automobile fuel economy in three decades and huge gains in ethanol use as part of a compromise energy bill.

Democrats were forced to strip away a contentious $21.8 billion tax package including billions of dollars in tax increases on the biggest oil companies because of determined Republican opposition and a White House veto threat over the new taxes.

Democratic leaders fell one vote short, 59-40, in getting the 60 votes needed to overcome a GOP filibuster. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., was the only Democrat to break ranks.
